The "Ability is Ageless" Award Luncheon is coming up on
October 30 ... a once-in-a-lifetime chance to honor outstanding
older workers in your company and to salute Judge Damon Keith!

The deadline for submitting nominations for consideration for a Most ABLE Award is this Friday, October 13.

Here's what you need to do this week  . . .

ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED AT OCTOBER 30 "ABILITY IS AGELESS" LUNCHEON

Is there an outstanding older worker in your company who deserves recognition for exceptional service?  Operation ABLE is currently accepting nominations for the “Ability is Ageless” Awards.  The awards honor workers aged 50 and over, or with 25 years at a company, who make a daily difference at work.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all the older workers who give so much of themselves every single day at work,” said Mary McDougall, president of Operation ABLE of Michigan, the area’s leading provider of employment services for mid-career and older adults.

"The luncheon is a very positive way for employers to honor older workers who make a daily difference at their companies through their experience, work ethic and dedication to excellence," she noted.

“We are very impressed by the contributions and dedication of the nominees we have received so far,” said McDougall citing excerpts from nominations submitted by several companies:

  • "a role model both at work and in the community by showing others how hard work, determination, and dedication can contribute to both a successful personal and professional life."
  • "a no nonsense, hands-on employee."
  • "When the chips are down, she never fails to come through."
  • "never complains, charges right in to perform the tasks at hand."
  • "a tireless worker who has the best interest of her family, co-workers and company at heart."

The awards will be presented at the Seventeenth Annual “Ability is Ageless” Luncheon on Monday, October 30, at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn.

To be eligible, a nominee must live or work in Michigan, be 50 years of age or older or have 25 years of service to a company by October 30, 2006, and be currently employed.  There is no limit to the number of employees a business or organization can nominate.

Each person nominated by his or her employer will be featured in the luncheon's slide presentation and program book and receive a Certificate of Distinguished Service.

From nominations received by this Friday, October 13, a committee of human resource professionals and workforce development specialists will select nine honorees to receive the Most ABLE Award.  These honors will be presented by Carmen Harlan, WDIV-TV news senior anchor, in an especially moving ceremony.

Everyone who is nominated will be honored at the luncheon.  Each person will be described in the program, and his or her photo will appear in the luncheon slide program.  We will continue to accept program descriptions and photos until October 20.

The nomination form and a fact sheet can be downloaded at www.OperationABLE.org/luncheon.  The form is designed so it can easily be returned by e-mail.  Forms are also available by calling Operation ABLE at 313.832.0922.

PHOTO SESSION SET FOR OCTOBER 12

A special feature of the awards luncheon is a colorful slide show featuring all honorees. Each honoree is asked to call Operation ABLE (313-832-0922) and schedule a 10-minute photo session for October 12 with our photographer at our office in Detroit.  Our office is located in the Hannan House at 4750 Woodward Avenue just south of Warren Avenue.

If a nominee is not available for this 10-minute session, we ask that the employer provide us with a good quality, recent digital photograph. The photo should be a close-up, head-and-shoulders shot.  We can scan printed photos and return them to the honoree. Digital photos can be sent as e-mail attachments.  We can continue to include these photos until October 20.

NEAL SHINE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TO BE PRESENTED TO JUDGE DAMON J. KEITH

In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments during 39 years on the federal bench and his distinguished service to the community,  Operation ABLE of Michigan will present the Neal Shine Lifetime Achievement Award to U.S. Circuit Court Judge Damon J. Keith at the 2006 Ability is Ageless Luncheon on October 30.

This award is named after Neal Shine, the retired publisher of the Detroit Free Press.  Neal exemplifies all the qualities that are associated with this honor.  After 40 years of service to the paper, he retired in 1990 but was called back from retirement to become publisher, guiding the newspaper through a period of change.  He retired again in 1995 but continued to use his experience and skill as a faculty member at Oakland University until his retirement last year.

Throughout his tenure on the federal bench Judge Keith has consistently been a courageous defender of the constitutional and civil rights of all people.

Judge Keith has hired more than 70 law clerks, including more than 50 minority law clerks - more than any other federal judge in history.  These clerks have enjoyed extraordinary success and have gone on to become federal and state judges, law professors, state attorney generals, corporation counsel, partners in major law firms, and influential legal activists.

The luncheon will feature a new video prepared by the Wayne State University Law School summarizing his amazing career and the impact he has had on the nation and on the Detroit community.
