In
recognition of his outstanding accomplishments during 39 years on
the federal bench and his distinguished service to the community, Operation ABLE of Michigan will present the Neal Shine
Lifetime Achievement Award to
U.S. Circuit Court Judge Damon J.
Keith at the
2006 Ability is
Ageless Luncheon on October 30.
As a
member of the federal judiciary, Judge Keith has consistently been a
courageous defender of the constitutional and civil rights of all
people.
In
his tenure on the federal bench, Judge Keith has hired more than 70
law clerks, including more than 50 minority law clerks - more than
any other federal judge in history. These clerks have enjoyed
extraordinary success and have gone on to become federal and state
judges, law professors, state attorney generals, corporation
counsel, partners in major law firms, and influential legal
activists.
As a
Detroit community leader, in 2004, Judge Keith was responsible for
organizing members of Detroit's African-American business community
to save the city's Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American
History from bankruptcy.
In
2005 the judge served as the co-chair for the National Victory
Celebration for the Farewell to Mrs. Rosa Parks, organizing the homegoing services for Mrs. Parks across the country. He
accompanied her body, as she was honored in Montgomery, Alabama,
Washington, D.C., and Detroit.

Operation ABLE is
currently accepting nominations from employers
who want to honor their outstanding older workers at the luncheon.
The area's top mature workers (50 years and older or with 25 years
of service to their company) will be recognized for their
exceptional contributions and achievements. The luncheon, a
memorable and heartwarming event hosted by Michigan's leading
provider of job training and employment assistance for mid-career
and older workers, will be held at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn from
noon to 2 p.m.
"This
celebration is a very positive way for employers to honor older
workers who make a daily difference at their companies through their
experience, work ethic and dedication to excellence," said
Mary McDougall, vice president of Operation ABLE of Michigan. At recent
luncheons upwards of a hundred well-deserving workers have been
honored by employers from all sectors of the business community,
including manufacturing, construction, retail, service, health care,
banking, finance, and the nonprofit arena.
Carmen Harlan,
WDIV-TV news senior anchor, will serve as the event's emcee. Each
person nominated by his or her employer will receive a Certificate
of Distinguished Service and will be featured in the luncheon's
slide presentation and program book. Nine honorees will receive
special recognition with Most ABLE Awards that will be presented by
Harlan in an especially moving ceremony.
